Meet Salma
Salma Ahmed lives in Scranton and is a graduate of Marywood University. Salma is committed to social justice, basic human rights, and a healthy environment. She is called to run for U.S. Congress, where those values are under-represented. As a Pakistani Muslim woman who has volunteered serving people from all walks of life, the ongoing genocide in Gaza moves her to seek a seat in Congress to be a voice for peace.
Locally, she’s worked directly with refugees through the U. of Scranton’s Refugee Solidarity Committee included fundraising, events, World Refugee Day programming, and translating for Punjabi and Urdu-speakers.
Salma has organized and helped with activities for elders at the Gino Merli Veterans Center and Marywood Heights Nursing Center. She has sorted and coordinated donations for Friends of the Poor, tutored at the NativityMiguel School of Scranton, and painted, cleaned, and did other home repairs with NeighborWorks. She also served on the board of the Islamic Center of Scranton and was Vice President of the Food Recovery Network at Marywood.
The safety of aid workers and healthcare workers in Gaza are a priority for Salma--she has distributed food at the St. Francis Soup Kitchen, Commission for Economic Opportunity’s lunch program, and Family-to-Family Thanksgiving Food Basket Giveaway. In 2021, she traveled to assist at federal vaccine clinics in Houston, TX and Newark, DE with Islamic Circle of North America Relief and Masjid 'Isa ibn Maryam “Jesus, son of Mary”, respectively. Internationally, she volunteered in Guatemala on Marywood University’s medical mission service trips and on her trips to Pakistan with the youth and villages.
She will bring the same passion for service to Washington, if elected.
